Top five at The Fringe

10 April 2012

More than 800,000 tickets will be sold at this year's Fringe, so how can you ensure that your money is going on the hottest shows? Here are a few tips for those seeking the Edinburgh buzz.

The Bomb-Itty of Errors. This has already proved a hit in America, and now crosses the herring-pond to conquer Britain. Four boys have ditched the iambic pentameters and rewritten Shakespeare's A Comedy of Errors as a piece of rap music. Pleasance Courtyard. Box office: 0131 556 6550

Geoffrey Hayes in Over The Rainbow. Geoffrey dons his bright yellow dungarees once more to continue his career as postmodern icon. Expect a few shocks and disturbing revelations about Zippy and Harold's adolescence in this strange, sadly touching show. Pleasance Dome. Box office: 0131 556 6550.

Jerry Springer - The Opera. It feels like sacrilege to say that this incredibly funny production could afford to lose 20 minutes, but less would definitely be more here. Even so, Richard Thomas and Stewart Lee's piece (which started off at the BAC) is worth it for the tap-dancing Ku Klux Clan and the refreshingly obscene recitative. Assembly Rooms. Box office: 0131 226 2428.

The Drowned World. Young playwright Gary Owen's writing reaches new heights in this Paines Plough production of his unworldly Orwellian tale about envy and beauty. Traverse Theatre. Box office: 0131 228 1404.

100. The Imaginary Body Theatre company's visually inventive, intriguing play asks, if you die, which memory would you choose from your whole life to define eternity? Smirnoff Underbelly. Box office: 0870 745 3083.
