Charlotte Prodger has been named as the winner of the 2018 Turner Prize.

The Glasgow-based artist, who won for an intimate film shot on her iPhone, was presented with the leading art world award this evening at Tate Britain by novelist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

Prodger, 44, beat competition from artists Luke Willis Thompson, Naeem Mohaiemen and collective Forensic Architecture, all of whom presented video work as part of the shortlist exhibition at Tate Britain.

In a five star review of the exhibition, the Standard’s art critic Matthew Collings called it “one of the most enjoyable Turner Prizes I think I have ever seen.”

He said that Charlotte Prodger’s work Bridgit “ruminates on what it is to have a personality”.

This year's judging panel are said to have praised all four shortlisted artists for being "committed to making a difference to the world today" and producing "timely and urgent" work.

They singled Prodger out for the "painterly quality" of her solo exhibition Bridgit, seen at Bergen Kunsthall in Norway, and the way it "explores lived experience as mediated through technologies and histories".

"The work meanders through disparate associations ranging from JD Sports and standing stones to 1970s lesbian separatism and Jimi Hendrix’s sound recordist," the judges said.

The Turner Prize awards £25,000 to the winner, with £5,000 going to each of the shortlisted artists.

Notable previous winners include Grayson Perry, Damien Hirst, Jeremy Deller, Gillian Wearing and last year’s winner Lubaina Himid, who became both the oldest artist and the first black woman to win the prize in 2017.

The Turner Prize exhibition is at Tate Britain until January 6 2019. For more information, visit tate.org.uk
