The controversial Turner Prize will be presented outside London for the first time it has been announced.

The art award, which has been based in the capital since 1984, will move to the Tate Liverpool gallery in 2007/8.

Named after early 19th century artist JMW Turner, the award's previous winners include Damien Hirst and cross-dressing potter Grayson Perry.

Liverpool's hosting of the prize will coincide with its status as European Capital of Culture. A spokesman for Tate Liverpool confirmed the decision.

Peter Mearns, director of marketing at the regeneration body The Northwest Regional Development Agency, said: "The Turner Prize coming to Liverpool is incredibly important for Merseyside and the Northwest and is a major boost for the city's Capital of Culture celebrations.

"The UK's most prestigious art exhibition and awards ceremony will be instrumental in encouraging more visitors to come and experience the region's outstanding artistic offering."
