Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly had to step in to put out a fire during a Britain’s Got Talent audition.

A simple plate-smashing routine soon spiralled out of control when Greek auditionee Bambas took to the London Palladium stage to fight for his spot in the next round.

The judges – Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden, Alesha Dixon and David Walliams – reportedly got involved in his audition, getting up on stage to smash plates and even throw them at McPartlin and Donnelly, who were in the wings.

But the Geordie double act soon turned saviour after a glass of flames on Bambas’ head fell to the ground, causing the hosts to run on stage with water to douse the fire.

A source told The Mirror: “We are used to all sorts happening on the show, but this really was the most crazy audition we have ever seen. The mess took ages to clear up.”

Cowell was also reportedly chucking BGT mugs onto the stage amidst the smashing chaos.

Later, the insider claims, the producers went to the panels’ desk to have a word with the foursome.

Holden, 46, then mused: “Oh dear. I think we’re going to get grounded,” while Walliams admitted it “got slightly out of hand”.

Last week, all six stars took the tube to the auditions with McPartlin – who recently announced his split from Lisa Armstrong – grinning in the background.

Standard Online has contacted representatives of Britain's Got Talent for comment.

Britain’s Got Talent will return to screens later this year.
