Now in its second year, the BBC Music Awards are back for another night of live music performances and prize-giving to some of the biggest artists in the world.

The awards, which encompass the musical remit of BBC Radio 1, 1Xtra, and Radio 2, take place at the Genting Arena, Birmingham this afternoon – and the whole thing is airing on BBC One tonight.

Here’s what you need to know about the show – who’s performing, who’s nominated, and how you can tune in.

1) The nominees

The three big awards of the night are British Artist of the Year, International Artist of the Year, and BBC Live Performance of the Year, voted by a panel. Here are the shortlists for each.

British Artist: Adele, Ed Sheeran, Jamie xx, Florence + The Machine, Foals, Years & Years

International Artist: Foo Fighters, Hozier, Major Lazer, Prince, Taylor Swift, The Weeknd

Live Performance: Adele at the BBC, Florence + The Machine at Glastonbury, Jeff Lynne’s ELO at Radio 2, Lionel Richie at Glastonbury, Radio 1 Ibiza Prom, 1Xtra Grime Prom

2) The performers

There’s a mix of huge pop acts, 2015 favourites, and new hopefuls performing this year.

For the Radio 1 crowd, there’s X Factor behemoths One Direction and Little Mix, BBC Sound of 2015 winners Years & Years, belting vocals from Jess Glynne and Ellie Goulding, James Bay (and his hat), Hozier, and OMI.

Then there’s rising star Jack Garratt, who recently won the Critics’ Choice category at the 2016 BRIT Awards.

On the Radio 2 end of things, there’s Rod Stewart, Stereophonics, Faithless, Beautiful South duo Paul Heaton and Jacqui Abbott, and The Shires.

3) How to watch from home

The two-hour show will be broadcast on BBC One from 8pm, and will also be available on iPlayer afterwards.

Jo Whiley is hosting coverage on Radio 2 from 8pm too.

4) The official playlist on Spotify

Want to get in the mood for the Awards event? Here’s a playlist featuring the performing artists.

5) Getting last-minute tickets

Near Birmingham? Not stuck in work? If you can make it to the Genting Arena before it all kicks off live at 4pm, there are still some tickets left for the show. Consider it another chance to see One Direction before their hiatus kicks in.
