Normal People begins in the fictional town of Carricklea, where Marianne and Connell both attend the same school.

The Irish Independent reported that the scenes were filmed in the small town of Tubbercurry in the coastal County Sligo.

Traditional Irish pub Brennan’s, the St John Evangelist Church and Killoran’s pub were all used as filming locations.

As Marianne and Connell head off to study at Trinity College, Dublin, it won't come as a surprise to learn that the 428-year-old university features heavily throughout the series.

Trinity’s famous front square, as well as its library, vast cricket pitches and the Robert Emmet Theatre provide a picturesque backdrop.

Marianne’s student house was filmed in Dublin’s affluent Ballsbridge neighbourhood on Wellington Road, a leafy street with attractive red-brick buildings.

Forest Avenue was used to double up as a place in Sweden after Marianne travels there in the book, with Fumbally Café and Stables also being used to represent a part of the Scandinavian country.

Italy

According to the i newspaper, the crew filmed as Il Casale on Tenuta Verzano, close to the village of Sant’Oreste, about 35km north of Rome.
