The BBC has given fans the first look at Olivia Colman as Madame Thénardier in their upcoming small-screen adaptation of Les Misérables.
Broadchurch actress Colman, who will ascend to the throne on Netflix hit The Crown, looks sternly at the camera in character for her role in the latest miniseries based on the French Revolution hit.
The BBC has also released images of Ellie Bamber as Cosette, Josh O’Connor as Marius and Adeel Ahktar as Monsieur Thénardier, the man closest to Colman’s character.
The new preview pictures follow the initial cast images of Lily Collins as Fantine, David Oyelowo as Javert and Dominic West as John Valjean.
Adapted by BAFTA fellow Andrew Davies, the serialised adaptation of the world-renowned book will “bring to life” the words and characters created by Victor Hugo.
The six-part series will cast Jean Valjean and Javert’s cat-and-mouse relationship into the centre as they tussle in an increasingly unsettled France.
The episodes will seek to explore the theme of struggles and triumphs of the lower class highlighted in the successful novel, which has also spawned a stage and screen musical.
Les Misérables was filmed on location throughout Northern France and Belgium. A transmission date is yet to be announced.
