Big Brother beats Love Island in TV ratings war on launch night

The reality TV show’s first episode attracted the most viewers on Monday night

Big Brother has smashed Love Island in the ratings war after a scheduling clash saw the two shows compete for viewers on their launch nights.

The show aired at on Channel 5 at 8.30pm, while Love Island started at 9pm on ITV2, forcing reality TV fans to choose between the two.

Despite the dating show trending on Twitter, Big Brother is clearly still the nation’s guilty pleasure with the social experiment show pulling in 3 million viewers across its two-hour transmission to Love Island’s 2.1 million.

But despite the difference in the stats, the shows both attracted similar viewing shares. Big Brother just edged ahead with 6.6 per cent while Love Island attracted 6.5 per cent.

The first episode of Love Island kicked off with a tour of the all-new villa and the coupling up of contestants.

Big Brother introduced 16 new housemates to the public, with one housemate selected by the viewers to join the final line-up.

Although the shows won’t clash during the week, they will air at the same time on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

Love Island airs tonight on ITV at 9pm, while Big Brother will also air this evening at 10pm on Channel 5.
