Brad Pitt has been nominated for an Emmy award in the Guest Actor in a Comedy Series category for a three-minute sketch he performed on Saturday Night Live.

The 56-year-old portrayed Dr Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, in a short skit filmed remotely during the coronavirus pandemic. In the clip, Pitt donned a grey wig and suit, and said: "First, I'd like to thank all the older women in America who have sent me inspiring — and sometimes graphic — emails.”

Fauci is well-liked in the US, and has been hailed as a steadying figure during an extremely unsure time, thanks to his solid advice and calm demeanour

At the end of his segment, Pitt removed his wig and glasses to address "the real Dr Fauci": "Thank you for your calm and your clarity in this unnerving time,” he said. “And thank you to the medical workers, first responders and their families for being on the front line.”

"I think he did great,” Fauci told Telemundo's Un Nuevo Dia.

“I'm a great fan of Brad Pitt, and that's the reason why when people ask me who I would like to play me I mention Brad Pitt. He's one of my favourite actors. I think he did a great job."

Although the segment was undoubtedly heartwarming, some fans were shocked to see that a three-minute clip earned Pitt an Emmy nomination:

However, it’s not the first time a short sketch has received a nod from the awards, and SNL skits are regularly nominated.

Pitt is nominated alongside SNL hosts Eddie Murphy and Adam Driver, as well as Dev Patel for Modern Love, Luke Kirby for The Marvelous Mrs Maisel and the late Fred Willard for Modern Family.
