We get to see another side of the formidable Queen Charlotte

As part of its major Tudum Festival, Netflix has released the first clip of its Bridgerton prequel, Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story.

The two-minute video has already pulled in over a million views: fans have been on tenterhooks waiting for more news about the prequel since it was first announced in May 2021.

In the clip, we see a young Charlotte trying to scale a garden wall, approached by a handsome young man (The Sandman’s Corey Mylchreest). Charlotte is trying to escape because she doesn’t want to marry King George. She hasn’t seen him yet but “no one will speak of him”, so she assumes he is “a beast or a troll”. Well, guess what, he’s not - the handsome man is in fact the King.

“When Charlotte met George, a Ton love story began. It is with great pleasure to share a first look at Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, a new series from Shonda Rhimes coming soon,” tweeted the official Bridgerton Twitter account when sharing the clip.

The new series has been written by Bridgerton and Inventing Anna mastermind Shonda Rhimes, and will tell the story of Queen Charlotte’s early life.

Golda Rosheuvel returns as Queen Charlotte and Adjoa Andoh returns as Lady Danbury, while India Amarteifio (best known for playing Lizzie in Sex Education) will play the younger Charlotte, and Arsema Thomas will play the younger Lady Danbury.

So far not much more is known about the series, but we do know that it will be eight episodes long and will come out sometime next year.

Introducing the clip at the live-streamed Tudum Festival, Rhimes said: “I wanted to make this show because I was always very interested in the origin story of Queen Charlotte and how she came to be the woman that we all know in Bridgeton. So this was our chance to tell that story.”

During the festival, Netflix also shared a bit of Bridgerton content, with a video of Luke Newton (Colin Bridgerton) and Claudia Jesse (Eloise Bridgerton) painting and answering questions. In the same clip, Nicola Coughlan reads Lady Whistledown’s first newsletter from Season 3 Episode one, which will be titled Out of the Shadows.

“Dearest gentle reader, we’ve been apart for far too long. At last, London’s smart set has made its return, and so too has this author. As the season begins, the question on everyone’s mind is, of course, which newly-minted debutante will shine the brightest?” she says. “The crop this year appears to be rather dazzling indeed. Unfortunately, not every young lady can attract the light.”

It’s exciting stuff, but those were all the morsels hungry audiences were given. We still don’t have a release date for Bridgerton Season 3, which focuses on the relationship between Colin and Penelope.

The Tundum Festival was streamed on Netflix’s YouTube channel on Saturday and included news, trailer releases and panels, plus features from special guests including Kevin Hart, Chris Hemsworth, Michelle Yeoh, and Lily Collins.

Films and shows that were featured include Emily in Paris, Squid Game, The Witcher, Lupin, Enola Holmes 2, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery and Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio.

Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story will be released in 2023
