Charlie Sheen has opened up on how being “too irresponsible” to look after one of his daughters gave him a new perspective on sobriety.

The American actor, famed for his role in Two and a Half Men, revealed how he was left devastated after he failed to take his daughter to a meeting because he was too drunk to drive.

Opening up on the incident on Loose Women, Sheen said: “I couldn’t get my daughter to an appointment that she had. I don’t drink and drive ever, I have never had a DUI [Driving Under the Influence].

“I was like, ‘Wow, I am not even responsible enough to be available for my children’s needs.’ The next morning I woke up and was like, ‘Today is the day.’”

Sheen was famously dismissed from US sitcom Two and a Half Men after his erratic behaviour became evident back in 2011.

He has since told how how he is keen to return to the show to end it the “way it should have”.

“Of course [I would like it to come back] because there is a trend towards reboots these days and I think that would be one that folks might tune in for,” Sheen said.

“It doesn’t have to go on for another five years, it would just be nice to do a couple of seasons and end it as it should have.”

The actor has since vowed to return to screens soon, but joked he has "nothing to promote" yet.

Sheen is father to Cassandra, 34, Sam, 15, Lola, 13 and Bobby and Max, 10.

Loose Women is on ITV, weekdays at 12.30pm
