Christine Lampard tried to hold back tears on Loose Women as the panellists discussed their NHS heroes.

In a special edition of the show, which paid tribute to NHS staff during the coronavirus crisis, the presenter, 41, found herself welling up as she spoke about her sister’s best friend who works as a nurse in the intensive care unit in Ulster Hospital.

Honouring Rachel Small, she said: “It gets me emotional thinking about it, they are putting their lives at risk all the time for us.

“I get so emotional every time I think about it because I find it so difficult to think that they have to worry about their little children and yet all I have to do is stay inside my house and it puts it all into perspective.”

Fanning away tears, she continued: “I told her I wasn’t going to cry today and here I am doing it.”

Lampard had to ask panellist Stacey Solomon to take over as she composed herself.

The emotional one-off special was the first new episode of Loose Women since lockdown measures were put in place, with ITV previously showing reruns of classic episodes of the daytime chat show.

Filmed over webcams with the four panellists speaking to one another from their living rooms, Lampard and Solomon were joined by Nadia Sawalha and Brenda Edwards as they also debated whether parents should be fined if their children breached lockdown, and discussed what they had learned from the crisis.

Speaking about her own experience of lockdown, Lampard said: “I’m trying to have little pockets to myself to breathe and appreciate things more.

“I cannot wait to see my family after this. I’m sending virtual hugs to you all.”

Loose Women continues weekdays at 12.30pm on ITV
