Bradley Walsh is reportedly set to become the new Doctor Who side-kick, starring opposite newcomer Jodie Whittaker.

The former Coronation Street star and host of The Chase will accompany the first female doctor on her travels in the Tardis, according to reports.

“Bradley is super excited to be joining the cast of Doctor Who in such a key role,” a source told The Mirror.

"It means that his schedule over the coming months will be jam-packed – so he won’t be able to continue with the full range of programmes he currently makes for ITV.

“But, crucially, it won’t affect his role as presenter of The Chase. He loves that show with a passion and so does the audience, so he’s delighted to have found a way to make it all work,” the source added.

The role of the Doctor's assistant has usually been played by a young woman, Jenna Coleman, Billie Piper and Freema Agyman have all appeared as companions in the past, although there were a number of male companions in the original run.

The reports divided fans on Twitter. Some felt Walsh would be perfect in the role, calling him a ‘legend’.

While others felt that the comedy actor’s casting would be just a step too far.
