David Attenborough’s film about the London Natural History Museum has topped a list of best-selling historical DVDs and books.

Figures from Amazon.co.uk show his Natural History Museum Alive DVD was the best-selling history product on the site in the past 12 months.

The film sees the broadcaster and naturalist, who will be 90 next month, discuss many of the museum’s extinct creatures — such as dinosaurs, ice age beasts and giant reptiles — as they “come alive” with the use of CGI imagery.

In second place was a GCSE modern history revision book and in third the DVD of the Horrible Histories TV series. The figures were released as the retail giant announced that customers can buy pre-sale seats to West End show Horrible Histories: The Best Of Barmy Britain online on Amazon Tickets. It will run at the Apollo Theatre from August 3 to September 5.

Three of journalist Andrew Marr’s works are in the top 10: the book versions of A History Of Modern Britain and A History Of The World and the DVD of the latter. But they were behind Simon Schama’s A History Of Britain, which came fourth for sales.

Amazon said it had seen a 20 per cent increase in history book and DVD sales overall since this time last year.

Geraldine Wilson, Amazon Tickets general manager, said: “These sales show that Britain loves learning about its history, so we are delighted to be able to offer Amazon Tickets customers an early chance to get tickets to this very popular show.”

2016 is a big year for historical milestones, including the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s death and the Queen’s 90th birthday today.
