Doctor Who will return for just half the amount of episodes next year as Peter Capaldi will take time off to pursue other projects.

According to reports, the 57-year-old will play the Time Lord for a reduced run so that he can work on directing his own film.

The Scottish star will return to the role for a short 2016 series and a Christmas special, but has admitted that he’d struggle to do more.

Speaking at the Radio Time Festival, he said: “If you did the series all year there’d be casualties – and one would be its quality.

“There’s a point where you can’t drive people any harder."

He added: “Playing the Doctor takes up so much time. It doesn’t leave much room for other things.”

Capaldi is thought to be working on a new film about his time as the singer and guitarist in punk band The Dreamboys.

He is also expected to direct a number of episodes of Armando Iannucci’s show Veep in the US.
