Kris Marshall is reportedly in the running to take on the role of Doctor Who’s assistant.

The Death in Paradise actor, 44, was being rumoured to replace Peter Capaldi in the lead role before Jodie Whittaker was chosen.

His name is now being bandied about to succeed Pearl Mackie as the Time Lord’s new assistant.

A source told The Sun: “Kris is a big fan of the show and the BBC are a big fan of his.”

Jodie Whittaker is revealed as the 13th Doctor in Doctor Who

Whittaker was unveiled as the new Doctor in a teaser trailer which premiered after the 2017 Wimbledon Men’s final. She will pick up the role when Capaldi leaves the show following the 2017 Christmas episode.

The Broadchurch actress – who will be the first female to play the Doctor in its 54 year history – reassured fans to “not be scared by my gender”.

She said: “It feels completely overwhelming, as a feminist, as a woman, as an actor, as a human, as someone who wants to continually push themselves and challenge themselves, and not be boxed in by what you're told you can and can't be.

“Because this is a really exciting time, and Doctor Who represents everything that's exciting about change. The fans have lived through so many changes, and this is only a new, different one, not a fearful one.”

A BBC spokesperson said no decisions have been made as of yet on companion casting.
