When real-life Time Lord Peter Capaldi beamed into BBC Radio 1 for an interview on Nick Grimshaw’s breakfast show, fans of Doctor Who were quick to ask some of the big questions about what’s in store for the rest of the current series.

During the chat, Capaldi confirmed that Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams will be returning in Episode 10 of as Ashildr.

Williams’ character was introduced earlier in the series as a young Viking to whom the Doctor granted immortal life after her untimely death. However, over the course of several millennia, she experienced multiple lifetimes’ worth of pain and loss, taking an understandable toll on her.

Even more excitingly for fans, Capaldi hinted at the return of the Doctor’s iconic sonic screwdriver accessory. The tool debuted in 1968 and had been a mainstay of the revived series since 2005, but was scrapped in the current series and replaced by a pair of sonic sunglasses.

Many fans have expressed their dislike of the specs, with a Change petition set-up to encourage producers to ditch them.

“I think those fans of the sonic screwdriver should not fret. Fear not,” Capaldi said. “If I was a fan of the screwdriver I wouldn’t lose any sleep. But I do like the shades, I think they’re fun.”

The actor gave a vague answer when asked when his next lot of Doctor Who filming would take place (“next year at some point”), with rumours that the show may not have a full series in 2016 while showrunner Steven Moffat concentrates on Sherlock.
