The actor who plays the young Howard Stark said he’s not done with the character

Just over two weeks ago, Marvel fans got the news they were perhaps expecting, but certainly not hoping for: TV series Agent Carter was cancelled following its second season.

The series, from US network ABC, followed the adventures of SSR Agent Peggy Carter, first introduced in Captain America: The First Avenger, as she worked for and alongside Howard Stark – the father of Tony Stark.

But with declining ratings, the series was left hanging, potentially spelling the end of Carter’s time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

However, speaking to the Evening Standard ahead of the launch of his new series Preacher, Dominic Cooper, who played Howard Stark in The First Avenger and both seasons of Agent Carter, said that he reckons Peggy and Howard will be back.

Asked if there was a chance of someone like Netflix or Amazon picking up the series, he said: “I have no idea. I thought it was a great show, and I think it was wonderful that they were prepared to spend the amount of money on, essentially, a drama set in that era.

“I think those characters are really exciting to watch.”

Most gutting for fans is the fact that the series’ cancellation means we don’t get to see how Howard and Peggy created their lasting legacy in the MCU – the founding of organisation SHIELD.

Asked if the formation of SHIELD is still a story that needs to be told, Cooper said: “Yeah, and I think they will. [Peggy and Howard]’ll come back somehow – whether it’s on that network or another, or whether it’s that show or a different type of show, you’ll see them again somewhere, I have no doubt about it.

“There’s something inside me that definitely says that character’s not over with. I adore playing him, he’s great fun.”

Don’t give up yet, Marvel fans – Peggy Carter might not be gone for good.

The pilot episode of Preacher is streaming now on Amazon Prime Video
