Graham Norton raised a glass with viewers to the late Sir Terry Wogan as he kept up the beloved broadcaster’s Eurovision tradition.

Norton, 54, gave a short but sweet speech about Wogan, who famously hosted the UK’s coverage of the singing competition for many years.

Speaking before the ninth act performed, Norton said: “Last year we started a mini tradition, so if you do have a drink in front of you, be it a wine or vodka, a beer cocoa or tea, or even a glass of water, why not raise it with me now and toast the memory of the late great Sir Terry Wogan who always was and always will be the voice of Eurovision.”

Viewers across the country showed their support on social media, posting photos of themselves with drinks.

Norton succeeded Wogan in the commentary box in 2009.

Last year he started the tradition of avoiding an alcoholic drink until the ninth performance, something Wogan had advised him to do.

Speaking before the ninth act performed, Norton said: “Tonight’s Eurovision is a bittersweet one for many of us, because of course it’s the first contest since the death of Sir Terry Wogan.

“Eight years ago when I was lucky enough to get this job of commentating, Sir Terry very kindly, graciously phoned me and the only bit of advice he gave me was, ‘don’t have a drink before song nine’. Now, this is song nine.

“So whilst the crowd here cheer on their home boy, I would urge you back in the UK at home to raise a cup, a mug, a glass, whatever you have in front of you, and give thanks for the man who was, and always will be, the voice of Eurovision. Sir Terry, this is song nine.”

Wogan died in January 2016 following a battle with cancer.
