Mary Berry made a triumphant return to judging on the BBC in Britain’s Best Home Cook – and so did her cheeky sense of humour.

The first episode tasked contestants with incorporating nuts into their dishes as part of the cooks challenge.

As one contestant stepped up to present her plates to Berry, the 83-year-old judge had one suggestion: “This is delicious – but I would really prefer to have one dish that showcases nuts."

Fans went wild for the return of Berry’s “filth”, with some hailing her a "legend".

One wrote: “Mary Berry: 'I would prefer to have one dish that showcased nuts. It's filth! Pure filth!'”

Another said: “So happy to have the legend that is Mary Berry back on my screen #BBHC.”

A third tweeted: “Mary Berry keeps talking about the taste of nuts #sniggers #BritainsBestHomeCook.”

The new eight-week show is hosted by Claudia Winkleman and sees Berry as head judge. She is flanked by produce expert and former market trader Chris Bavin and current Duck and Waffle chef director Dan Doherty.

The show sees contestants go head-to-head in a bid to show off their individuality, skill and creativity in the kitchen, battling through two – sometimes three – rounds a week to fight for their place in the next heat.

Britain’s Best Home Cook is on BBC One, Thursdays at 8pm. Episode one is available now to catch up on BBC iPlayer.
