Galapagos: BBC documentary series ventures to the strangest place on Earth

Join a research expedition into the archipelago known for its vibrant wildlife

If there was such a thing as the land that time forgot, the closest thing would be the Galapagos Islands.

The archipelago in the Pacific Ocean is home to some of the strangest and most distinct creatures on earth.

It’s home to over 1000 species found nowhere else on the globe, and its biodiversity was a major factor in Charles Darwin devising his theory of natural selection.

Now there’s a new expedition heading into one of the strangest places in the known world, and the BBC is bringing us along for the ride.

This new three-part documentary series, simply titled Galapagos, is presented by Liz Bonnin, who joins a crew who are researching how the islands are changing in relation to shifts in climate.

“For the next few weeks, we’re going on a voyage of discovery, covering over 1000 kilometres through the Galapagos Islands,” she says.

“This paradise is under threat, as our world is changing like never before.

“Now we’re embarking on one of the most ambitious scientific expeditions ever attempted in the Galapagos.

“Equipped with cutting-edge technology, we’ll be able to study the wildlife of Galapagos up-close, to see how it’s adapting to change.”

It’s a voyage that takes in oceans, volcanoes and hidden caves, full of spectacular natural wonders.

While this is the perfect fix for anyone left wanting more by Planet Earth II, it’s also something different – with its emphasis on scientific research, it’s less of a glossy crowd-pleaser, but still packed with stunning views and finds.

If you can’t wait for Blue Planet II to come later in 2017, Galapagos is a must-watch.
