George Miller interview: ‘Mel Gibson will never turn up in Tom Hardy’s Mad Max films’

The creator of the post-apocalyptic saga rules out a Max-off between the two actors

Thirty years after Beyond Thunderdome, the Mad Max franchise was brought roaring back to life this summer with series reboot Fury Road.

Continuing the story of ‘mad’ Max Rockatansky, journeying through a post-apocalyptic wasteland where oil is precious and sanity is scarce, the film saw Tom Hardy take over the role previously held by Mel Gibson.

While Fury Road was rapturously received by critics and has seen the announcement of a sequel, Mad Max: The Wasteland, don’t expect Mel Gibson to pop up while Tom Hardy plays the lead part.

When asked about the possibility of that happening, series creator George Miller said: “No – for a very simple reason.

“It’s like having Sean Connery appear in a Daniel Craig James Bond. It would throw you out of the movie, it would confuse the audience, and you’re trying your damnedest to actually keep people in the movie rather than throw them out.

“Even though it would be interesting working with Mel again, certainly not in a Mad Max movie.”

Miller also addressed criticisms from some viewers who claimed that Charlize Theron’s character Furiosa played a more pivotal role in the film than Max himself (“That’s more their problem than mine”), and said that Furiosa “could be” back in future films (“We’re in conversation about that now”).
