Great British Bake Off fans have slammed the show after contestant Julia was sent home in the latest episode, describing the decision as 'outrageous'.

Viewers felt that there were other bakers who deserved to leave the show over Julia, in particular Stacey, who managed to bake a piece of greaseproof paper into her showstopper pie.

One twitter user wrote: “The real question is why did Julia leave this weeks Bake Off when it was Stacey who left baking parchment in her pie [sic].”

While another commented: “Bake Off tonight is outrageous. How Stacey survived ahead of Julia is beyond me.”

Others were more surprised by 21-year-old Julia’s age.

One viewer posted: “Julia is 21, married and has been on Bake Off. I’m almost the same age and all I have is crippling student debt”, and another tweeted: “I can’t get over that Julia is only 21”.

It was pastry week in the Bake Off tent, and the contestants were tasked with creating a series of pies.

First up was the signature, where the bakers created four elaborately decorated shortcrust pastry pies.

Then judge Paul Hollywood set a tricky technical which saw the contestants grapple with the Portuguese treat of pasteis de nata.

For the final, showstopper challenge, the judges were looking for perfectly formed hot water crust pastry pies with meaty fillings and fruit toppings.

Liam’s offering of curried goat and plantain with mango salsa triumphed, and he was crowned star baker.

The Great British Bake Off continues Tuesdays at 8pm on Channel 4.
