The James Bulger murder is one of the most notorious cases of child on child crime in recent history.

Twenty-five years after the incident, his mother Denise Fergus is releasing a book to tell her side of the story, as well as featuring in her own dedicated documentary on ITV.

Here’s everything you need to know:

What’s it about?

The documentary sees Bulger’s mother share her version of what happened in the aftermath of the disappearance of her son.

Interviewed by Sir Trevor McDonald in her own home, Fergus will open up about her grieving process over the past 25 years and share memories, photos and home video footage of the two-year-old.

She tells McDonald that she remembers Bulger as “so loving”.

Speaking in the documentary she says: “He was always laughing. He love listening to music. He was just a lovely little boy.”

The programme will also feature testimonies from other important figures in the case, who were interviewed in Bulger’s home town of Liverpool.

What happened to Jamie Bulger?

Two-year-old Jamie Bulger was snatched from a Liverpool shopping centre in 1993 by 10-year-olds Jon Venables and Robert Thompson.

The culprits tortured and killed Bulger, but were only sentenced to eight years in prison.

They were controversially granted anonymity upon their release to shield them from public anger.

Venables was recently put back behind bars after being charged with possessing over 1,000 indecent images of children.

When is it on?

The one-off documentary airs on Thursday, February 8 at 9pm.
