Ioan Gruffudd has claimed that his character in ITV’s Liar is "probably the most hated man in Britain".

The actor, who plays serial rapist Andrew Earlham in the hit drama, has said that people now "move away from him on the tube".

He told TV Times: "[Andrew] is probably the most hated man in Britain. I may be on the tube now and people will move away or the older generation will come at me with their umbrellas.

“It is great that they feel betrayed by Andrew and saddened by what he has done. He has issues. He is a clever guy and covers his track but that is part of the thrill for him too.”

Earlham has certainly sparked strong reactions from viewers, many of whom defended him at the start of the series when it seemed he might be innocent, only to do a dramatic about-turn when his crimes were revealed.

The most recent episode of the show saw Earlham’s victim Laura Nielsen (Joanne Froggatt) try to take revenge on the surgeon by kidnapping him.

But when Earlham escaped and attacked Nielsen, it looked like it might all be over for the teacher, until DI Vanessa Harmon came to her rescue with seconds to spare.

Liar continues Monday, October 16 at 9pm on ITV.
