Love Island has beaten Big Brother in the ratings for the first time.

The ITV2 series went head-to-head with Channel 5’s reality show on Sunday night and came out on top.

According to Digital Spy, Love Island had an average audience of 1.126 million while the average number tuning in to Big Brother was 1.069 million.

This meant that the ITV2 show, including HD and +1, enjoyed 5.1% of the viewing slot, while Channel 5 has just 4.8%.

While both reality shows have gone head-to-head a number of times this year, this is the first time that Love Island has pulled ahead in the viewing figures.

The increase in viewers could have something to do with the fact that former Miss Great Britain Zara Holland announced her departure from the show over the weekend.

After being controversially stripped of her title last week, Holland faced another blow after finding out that her mother had fallen ill.

In a statement, she said: “I’m so sad to leave the villa but it’s important for me to get home and spend time with my mum while she gets better.

“I’ve had the time of my life on Love Island and would like to thank all of my fellow Islanders and the production team for all their support.”

The current series of Big Brother has also been plagued with controversy after Marco Pierre White Jr was filmed having sex with fellow housemate Laura Carter.

Ofcom received 634 complaints after the episode aired and will now investigate whether or not action should be taken.
