As 2016 kicks off, it’s all about the return of Britain’s most beloved long-running crime series.

After the BBC's Silent Witness returned earlier this week with a storming new case, now it’s the turn of Midsomer Murders on ITV.

Back for an 18th series of feature-length mysteries surrounding the sleepy British village with an incredibly high body count, here’s what you need to know about the new run.

1) DCI John Barnaby is back

Neil Dudgeon is still the face of the show as DCI John Barnaby returns for the full series, joined by DS Charlie Nelson, once again played by Gwilym Lee.

2) There’s a brand new character

It’s not just old faces though – Manjinder Virk has joined the cast as Dr Kam Karimore. She said that the show is “reinventing itself subtly without losing what it is” – so fans can rest assured that she’ll fit in nicely with the Midsomer Murders status quo.

3) There’s no actual murder in episode one

OK, so we’ve said that the status quo remains intact, but here’s a shocker – there’s no actual murder in the first episode.

There’s still a mystery though, as a dead body somehow disappears – could a bodysnatcher be on the loose?

4) There might be aliens in one of the episodes

Yes, you read that right. One of the new instalments will touch on the topic of UFOs, as a strange anomaly is sighted in Midsomer. Is the show really about to go full-on intergalactic? The truth is out there.

5) It’s still the same old Midsomer Murders

For better or worse, you know what you’re getting with Midsomer Murders – and quite rightly the team behind the series have gone for an ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ approach.
