Sacha Baron Cohen's forthcoming series, Who Is America?, has faced a new backlash over a rape skit.

Borat star Cohen has already been criticised over his new TV series which touches on numerous controversial topics including gun laws and immigration.

In one skit Cohen goes undercover as an Israeli terrorism expert called Erran Morad, who says to Larry Pratt, lobbyist and executive director emeritus of Gun Owners of America: “It’s not rape if it’s your wife.”

Another gag showed the 46-year-old duping Republican politicians into backing a pro-gun programme for toddlers and young children.

Social media users took to Twitter to slam the Ali G star over the “disturbing” show.

One user wrote: “Raping your Wife is Not Funny. Dirtbag New Sacha Baron Cohen series Who Is America? faces fresh controversy over rape skit.”

Another said: “#WhoIsAmerica is wild af. I can’t believe these morons are real people.” [sic]

A third commented: “I won't get to watch the full episode of #WhoIsAmerica until later today, but this clip is horrifying.”

However, others were quick to commend the actor on his “hilarious” collection of skits, pointing out that they are tongue in cheek.

One user posted: “The level of trolling that @SachaBaronCohen did on #WhoIsAmerica can never be outdone by anyone ... and dude deserves all of the accolades for being so bold, different, and keeping a straight face the whole time. I’m impressed.”

A second wrote: “#WhoIsAmerica is the real deal. Hysterically funny.”

Meanwhile a third commented: “@SachaBaronCohen's #WhoIsAmerica was phenomenal.”

The show is not yet available to watch in the UK and will air on Channel 4 at 9pm on Monday night.
