Paul Chuckle opened up about the death of his brother and comedy partner Barry in an emotional interview on This Morning, leaving fans in tears.

Opening the interview, he said: “It’s good to talk about him. Not only have we been together since I was born but we worked together for 55 years.”

Barry, 73, had been suffering from bone cancer before his death, an illness Paul revealed his brother kept from him until just a few months ago so they could carry on working.

Paul explained: “He had pains in his legs for about two years, before we went to pantomime a couple years ago. I’ve had sciatica and I told him it sounds like that. And he said that was what it was.

“He found out [what it was] at some time. He kept it from me and our manager, he didn’t want us to know because we would have said ‘no’ but he wanted to work until he died. He wanted to die on stage, like Tommy Cooper. He loved working and making people laugh.”

Later in the interview, he added: “It was only a couple of months ago I found out he was even ill, that ill, and he said he wants me to carry on. He said don’t stop. He wants me to do it so I will, hopefully carry on.”

Talking about their success in pantomime, Paul looked devastated as he said: “I don’t know why I keep saying ‘we’. It’s just me on my own now.”

He added: “Talking about him in the past is still hard. It's still hard. He'll live on forever. I'm sure he will.”

Paul and Barry last appeared on television together on Chuckle Time, a clip show series aired on Channel 5 this year.

The comedian, 70, also spoke of the poignant tribute over the weekend at the Rotherham vs Ipswich game, which saw scores of fans chant To Me, To You before applauding the late star.

Fans rushed to social media to compliment Paul on his “heartbreaking” interview, offering condolences and memories of their own.

This Morning airs weekdays from 10.30am on ITV.
