Piers Morgan hits back at critics who said he shouldn't have sipped a pint on Good Morning Britain

Piers Morgan has lashed out at trolls who took umbrage with him drinking a pint of beer while hosting Good Morning Britain.

The 55-year-old was treated by producers to a pint of bitter as news correspondent Jonathan Swain reported live from a pub to discuss the easing of coronavirus lockdown rules.

Yelping with joy, Morgan rushed to the pint before taking a large swig of the beverage, much to co-host Susanna Reid’s jocular disgust.

“It’s 6:38am in the morning, kids!” she laughed as Morgan sipped on his pint.

Morgan took no notice as he enjoyed his first bitter in months, adding: “I'll be having a couple of pints on Saturday.”

However, it seems not everyone found the funny side, with many of Morgan’s followers on Instagram and Twitter saying he wasn’t setting a great example to those watching at home.

One comment on Instagram clearly got under his skin, with Morgan deciding to read it out loud live on air.

“Drinking alcohol while working is against health and safety. Piers Morgan should know that. Sack him now,” Morgan said, before adding: “Now some of the k**** have gone over from Twitter and are now on Instagram.

“Well Rick, you have been blocked. I now need another follower to make up for Rick. So follow me!”

Saturday July 4 will see a number of pubs and restaurants open their doors after nearly four months of lockdown, in what has been dubbed as “super Saturday”.

Police chiefs and hospital staff have since warned about the dangers of people taking their new-found liberties too far, with fears that drunk individuals could clog up emergency services.

Despite his excitement at being able to visit the pub again, Morgan warned viewers to behave responsibly at the weekend.

“We all want to have fun but please give the police a break,” he said. “They need us to help them, we are all in this together.”

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV
