Piers Morgan has added fuel to his long-running feud with BBC Breakfast as Good Morning Britain celebrated its most watched episode ever.

The presenter boasted that his rivals were having their “backsides booted” as ratings soared for ITV, with Monday’s episode being the most watched in the show’s history.

“A couple of positives for GMB overnight, Monday’s show was the highest rated show in our history, in 937 programmes,” he said.

“So thank you for watching, we really appreciate it. Apologies to our friends at BBC Breakfast who are getting their backsides booted.”

Co-host Susanna Reid, who until 2014 was an anchor on BBC Breakfast, giggled at Morgan’s remarks.

He refused to let things lie as he continued to blast the show, reeling off findings detailing the top 10 TV shows that viewers had tweeted about during 2017, including QI, Blue Planet and Strictly Come Dancing.

He said: “In the top 10 is ITV’s GMB. I’m struggling to find BBC Breakfast there so if we had a mic it would be one of those ‘boom’ moments.

“Anyway don’t look downhearted over there. You can’t afford us so we can’t help you. But you just keep struggling on and we’re going to keep booting you in 2018.”

Explaining their popularity on social media, Reid said: “It helps when you have 6 million followers.”

Morgan took to celebrate the news on his Twitter page, alongside a picture of 47-year-old co-host Reid: “Yesterday’s @GMB was the highest rated in our 937-show history! Thanks for watching.”

The mother of three joined in the celebrations adding: “Ratings are in. WOW! Y’day’s @gmb was our BIGGEST audience share since launch.

“This year’s Christmas drinks are BACK ON @piersmorgan.”

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
