After BBC lost The Voice to ITV, it had a singing competition-sized hole in its output. Enter Pitch Battle, the choir and sing-off series that will go down a treat with Pitch Perfect fans.

Here’s everything you need to know about the new show:

What’s the format?

Each week, six vocal groups of different sizes and styles will face a series of singing challenges, from Pitch Perfect-style riff offs to a capella tasks. The successful group from each of the rounds will make it to the live final at the end of the series.

The episodes will open with a mash-up arranged by musical director Deke Sharon who worked on the Pitch Perfect films, which will feature all six groups competing in that week’s show.

Who’s judging it?

There will be two resident judges, Milkshake singer Kelis and choirmaster Gareth Malone, who’ll be joined by a guest judge each week. Among those lined up to lend their singing expertise to the panel are Joe Jonas Chaka Khan, Seal, and Will Young.

Who’s presenting it?

Mel Giedroyc will be fronting the singing show without either her Bake Off presenting partner Sue Perkins or her Let It Shine co-host Graham Norton for company. Pitch Battle will be Giedroyc’s first time presenting a primetime Saturday night series on her own, but the host isn’t fazed as she feels the programme “isn’t about the presenter”.

“I am really looking forward to it but this show is not about the presenter at all. I am there to keep the whole thing going. It’s about the joy music brings,” she said.

When’s it on?

Pitch Battle airs on Saturday 16 at 7.30pm on BBC One.
