After blasting back onto the big screen with the help of director JJ Abrams, Star Trek is about to boldly go where, well, it’s been before.
The sci-fi franchise is making a return to its small-screen roots in a new TV series, and a video teaser has given us a first look at the new logo – as well as a hint of the directions the show will take.
The series is simply titled Star Trek, and will arrive on CBS in 2017.
It comes from Hannibal showrunner Bryan Fuller, working alongside the likes of Rod Roddenberry, the son of original Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry, and Alex Kurtzman, who co-wrote the 2009 Star Trek film and its sequel Star Trek Into Darkness.
The trailer promises ‘New Crews, New Villains, New Heroes, New Worlds’ - with the original crew of Kirk, Spock and co. currently appearing in the film franchise, expect a different set of space explorers in the TV series.
It’s currently unknown whether the show will exist in the same universe as the original TV series from the original Sixties show, though it’s not expected to take place in the parallel universe set up in the 2009 film franchise.

A press release initially announcing the series confirmed that the show “is not related to the upcoming feature film Star Trek Beyond”.
A synopsis for the series reads: “The brand-new Star Trek will introduce new characters seeking imaginative new worlds and new civilizations, while exploring the dramatic contemporary themes that have been a signature of the franchise since its inception in 1966.“
