Steps star Faye Tozer has admitted her previous dance experience in the pop group has proved advantageous on Strictly Come Dancing.

Tozer, 42, came under fire from viewers after she was confirmed for the new series, with fans branding her “too experienced”.

Tozer addressed the backlash on Lorraine with partner Giovanni Pernice, admitting her dance history has helped her to quickly pick up the routines on the BBC ballroom hit.

Host Lorraine Kelly asked: “What are you saying to people who say you have an advantage?”

Tozer replied: “Do you know what? I do have an advantage in the way that I can pick up routines. One I’m so glad they took me on the show because it’s been my dream and two the audience will let you know who they want to see.

“There are always going to be a few of us who have experience – and I’ve never said that I haven’t.”

Tozer has impressed the judges with her routines, scoring 29 points to finish joint top of the leaderboard with her Cha Cha Cha in week one and 31 points with her Viennese Waltz last weekend.

Tozer isn’t the only contestant to come under fire from fans over prior dance experience.

Ashley Roberts faced a backlash over her years as a dancer in Pussycat Dolls. Hitting back she said her “booty popping” in the girl group doesn’t make her unfair competition.

“Dance experience? I mean if there’s booty popping in ballroom maybe that will, but I don’t think there is,” she told Mail Online.

“It’ll feel very foreign to my body, because I’m used to a little bit of like booty popping with the dolls!

“We just started [training] my body was like woah! I haven’t felt like this in a long time!”

Strictly Come Dancing is on BCC One, Saturday at 6:30pm
