Dan Callaghan has become the first candidate to leave the new series of The Apprentice – after admitting to Lord Sugar, “I can’t sell”.

The 23-year-old hopeful business partner struggled in the task, which involved running a food stall based around fish products, not managing to sell a single product through the day.

Despite his efforts, the customers may have been put off by his slightly erratic sales technique – generally running up to unsuspecting members of the public – as he attempted to sell tuna salad niçoise for £9 per box.

Things didn’t look great for Callaghan from the start – the first words that Lord Sugar uttered in the series were aimed at him, as he told the contestant to take his hands out of his pockets.

Also in the firing line was project manager April Jackson, who managed to avoid leaving the show in the first episode, despite the tradition of project managers often taking the fall for failed tasks.

Brett Butler-Smythe also dodged Lord Sugar’s firing finger.

His insistence that the team followed the “specifications” for large fishcakes partially contributed to the team creating far fewer products than they intended to, though he defended his stance in the boardroom.

The Apprentice continues with a second episode tomorrow night.
