There’s still two weeks left to go in the latest series of The Apprentice, but the process this year has undoubtedly been one of the toughest ever.

Fresh off the back of having to sell London property worth millions, this time around the candidates were asked to devise and pitch a brand new health food product – which both teams failed at spectacularly.

Team Conexus, led by Brett Butler-Smythe, came up with a dehydrated vegetable crisp product – though Vana Koutsomitis added too much oil, spoiling the samples, Richard Woods left key information that the crisps were raw and much healthier than standard chips off the packaging, and Brett delivered a woeful pitch.

Team Versatile, led by Charleine Wain, didn’t fare any better. They created bars based around super-foods – though Charleine’s recipe didn’t use enough of the key ingredients to boast the health claims on the packaging. Gary Poulton failed to sell any units to Tesco, despite having worked for them in a corporate capacity for seven years, while Joseph Valente’s packet design failed to impress.

In a first for The Apprentice, none of the retailers that Lord Sugar set up meetings with decided to place any orders from either team, leaving the sales tally as 0 – 0.

“No orders from you, and no orders from you. That’s never happened before,” said an unimpressed Lord Sugar. “I’m not sure how I’m gonna deal with this to be honest with you. I don’t know what we’re going to do.”

In the end, Lord Sugar asked all six candidates to return to the boardroom, and let each project manager save one of their team.

Ultimately it was Brett Butler-Smythe who narrowly missed out on a slot in the dreaded interviews round, through Lord Sugar credited him as “an honourable man” after dismissing him from the boardroom.
