The Great British bust up: Bingate returns as Ian Watters brands John Whaite a t*** in Baked Alaska Twitter spat

Despite taking place on The Great British Bake Off back in 2014, it seems that 'Bingate' is still rumbling on.

Ex-contestants John Whaite and Iain Watters have become embroiled in a Twitter spat after the former posted a meme relating to the controversial incident where Watters binned his Baked Alaska after Diana Beard removed it from the freezer causing it to melt.

Whaite, who won the 2012 series of the baking show, tweeted a picture of Beard with the words: “That’s a nice ice cream, it would be a shame if someone melted it.”

He captioned the post: “If you can’t be nice, be naaaasty.”

Watts was quick to hit back at the tweet, branding Whaite ‘a t***’.

“@John_Whaite … not cool you t***. Not sure what goes through your head, that you think this is the right thing to post”.

He wasn’t the only Bake Off alumnus unimpressed by Whaite’s post, with fellow former competitors including Nancy Birtwhistle, Sandy Docherty, Luis Troyano leaping to Beard and Watters’ defence.

Birtwhistle replied: “My grandmother always instilled in me. “If you can’t say anything nice then you shouldn’t say anything at all”. #wisewords, while Docherty simply tweeted: “Why?”

A similarly displeased Troyano commented: “Not great John to be honest. Diana has had a torrid time and the last thing she needs is this dragging up again.”

Series five contestant Chetna Makan asked: “Where is all this anger coming from?” but it was Richard Burr who delivered the final blow posting: “P** off you b******”.

Bingate was one of Bake Off’s biggest controversies during its time on the BBC, after Beard’s accidental removal of Watters’ dessert from the freezer.

By the time the contestant realised what had happened, the ice cream section of his Baked Alaska had melted, causing him to angrily throw it in the bin.

As he had nothing to present to judges Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood, he was eliminated from the competition.

Viewers responded with uproar, blaming Beard for Watters’ exit. She also later departed the series, reportedly due to ‘illness’, though many speculated it was in fact the stress of the incident that had caused her departure.

The Great British Bake Off returns to Channel 4 later this year.
