First came the Bake Off. Then came the Sewing Bee. Now get ready for the Pottery Throw Down.

Yes, the runaway success of the nation’s favourite baking show has seen another rustic British pastime being given a competitive make-over by the BBC, as ten amateur potters hope to prove themselves as master crafters.

Presented by Sara Cox, the show will see the hopefuls challenged with making a series of ceramics each week, in an attempt to impress judges Kate Malone and Keith Brymer Jones.

What can we expect? Well, it will be messier for a start. Bake Off might be the domain of sticky dough, but it’s got nothing on wet clay.

Don’t worry, pun-lovers – Sara Cox has ensured that the cheeky sense of humour will still be there.

“You don’t need to add puns in if you’re discussing making pottery because you’re already talking about cracks and rims,” she said to the Radio Times. Phew.

Then there are the epic challenges – the first episode sees the contestants tasked with a four-day assignment, making stackable kitchen bowls.

Bake Off may have ovens, but the Pottery Thrown Down is about to bring the heat as the contestants’ creations have to survive the trip to the kiln. Only the strong will survive.
