The People Next Door, Channel 4: tense drama asks whether Britain’s neighbours still trust each other

The experimental one-off drama from the creators of Blackout is filmed on phones and nanny-cam

If you live on a busy street or in a crowded block of flats in London, there’s a good chance that you don’t know your neighbours very well – aside from the odd ‘hello’ in the hallway.

But what would do if you thought the people on the other side of your wall were committing domestic abuse? Would it be right to question them, not knowing if they’ve actually done anything wrong? Or is ignoring it going to let it continue?

That’s the dilemma at the centre of Channel 4’s one-off drama thriller The People Next Door.

Playing out like a more grounded Paranormal Activity, the one-hour chiller is shot entirely on phones, home cameras and nanny-cams, as young couple Gemma and Richard try to investigate their neighbours.

As the pair attempt to get evidence from inside next door’s house, it seems they might have gone too far – who are the nightmare neighbours really?

It’s a gripping and experimental piece, so it’s no surprise that it comes from the producers behind Channel 4’s hit mini-series Blackout, about a Britain that descends into anarchy when the power goes out.

Paranoid and full of moral questions, it’s a tense and intriguing watch.
