Top Boy is back! Second series of Netflix reboot starts filming in London after Covid delays

“You asked for it, we gave it to you!”

Top Boy stars Ashley Walters and Kano have confirmed that filming has finally begun on the second series of the drama’s Netflix reboot.

Walters and Kano, real name Kane Robinson, revealed the news in a video shared on Netflix’s social media accounts.

Standing outside a trailer, a masked-up Walters, 38, told fans: “I’m not going to stay here and talk for long. You know what time it is, you can see the mask, you can see where we are.

“So we’re obviously shooting Top Boy. You asked for it, we gave it to you.”

His co-star added: “There you go, season 2, Netflix. Let’s go!”

Set on the fictional Summerhouse estate in Hackney and written by Ronan Bennett, Top Boy debuted on Channel 4 back in 2011, with Walters and Robinson starring as drug kingpins Dushane and Sully. Airing to widespread critical acclaim and garnering comparisons to HBO’s The Wire, it went on to pick up a Bafta nomination for Best Miniseries.

A second season followed in 2013, but the show was then dropped by Channel 4 the following year.

With the backing of rapper Drake, who discovered the series after coming across clips on YouTube, Top Boy was acquired by Netflix in 2017.

The rebooted edition of the series, which saw Walters and Robinson reprise their roles alongside new cast members like Bafta Rising Star winner Micheal Ward, Jasmine Jobson and rapper Little Simz, landed on the streaming platform last summer, with Drake credited as an executive producer.

He confirmed a follow-up series on Instagram earlier this year, with Ward sharing a photo of a new script on Instagram shortly after.

Filming was due to begin in the spring but was delayed due to the coronavirus lockdown, which forced sets around the country to shut down.
