The Westworld season three finale was as gripping as it was confusing, with things looking increasingly dire for humankind.

The sci-fi show’s epic climax saw Dolores Abernathy (played by Evan Rachel Wood) and Caleb Nicols (Aaron Paul) take on Engerraund Serac (Vincent Cassel) and Maeve Millay (Thandie Newton) to end the war between human and Host.

However, in true Westworld fashion, the dramatic clash led to more twists and turns with Dolores left dead, while Maeve and Caleb decided to team up to to try and prevent humanity hurtling towards a fairly certain apocalypse.

While the finale did offer us some answers to our burning questions – Caleb’s plot to shut down Rehoboam, for example, was actually made clear – Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy’s HBO series left us seriously confused - and excited for season four.

Here are all the burning questions we have after the Westworld season three finale…

1. Will the world actually end?

The pre-credits scene sees Maeve and Caleb look out over a ravaged Los Angeles, with humanity facing extinction and it’s clear to both of them that things aren’t looking great.

However, Caleb and the surviving humans have been given free will, and it’s seemingly now up to Caleb to lead the ‘revolution’ – though it's unclear what form the uprising will take.

Should Maeve and Caleb stay together following the clash, they have a hell of a fight on their hands – but Maeve may end up leaving Caleb on his own to face the impossible task of saving the world, considering she is still obsessed with her robot daughter.

2. What is Hale’s master plan?

What is Hale planning?
HBO

One huge indicator of what is to come in season four was the huge room of host cradles at Charlotte Hale’s (Tessa Thompson) disposal.

But before she unleashed her robotic henchmen, one of the truly shocking twists came after William (Ed Harris) broke into the Delos lab and found Hale – and a host version of himself.

After the host version of William brutally slit the real William’s throat, will Hale replace the infamous Man in Black with the host? How will she use her robot cavalry to her advantage?

3. Which William host is this?

William was killed by his own host
HBO

The Man in Black, like Dolores, could have at least two other versions of himself on the go. Some have speculated this host may have been created by the human pearl that Bernard made in series two (if you can remember that) and the series two finale showed an android of William being tested by a host version of his daughter.

4. Has Dolores really bitten the dust for good?

Dolores seemingly met her maker at the end
HBO

Dolores died so many times throughout the three series of Westworld, she could give South Park’s Kenny a run for his money – but it seems she really is gone for good after she sacrificed herself to stop Serac.

Dolores is now also left memory-less after her memories deleted by the Rehobaum – but let’s face it, Dolores has always found a way to be resuscitated and cheat death. Will we be seeing her in series four?

5. What about all the other Dolores’?

There's several other Dolores copies out there
HBO

As this is Westworld, no-one ever really dies, and sure enough, there are other Dolores copies out there – though perhaps the one with most influence is the copy of Dolores in Hale’s body, who seemingly had the power to broadcast straight into Dolores’s mind and even shut down her body entirely.

Could she have mind control powers like Maeve, or do the copies of Dolores have the power to communicate telepathically?

6. Will Serac survive?

Now Caleb and Maeve have created an alliance, Serac has been left wounded and alone. It’s unlikely he’ll get a quiet death off-camera, though with the Rehoboam now deleted, Serac is now basically left without a master. What could we see him do next in series four?

7. What did Bernard see?

What did Bernard see?
HBO

Bernard Lowe (Jeffrey Wright) had his own shock ending in the very final post-credit scene. Having been hanging out in the Sublime simulation (presumably) after he made it there at the end of season two, he discovered he had the key to the Delos data.

He was previously seen looking mystified, before shutting it down. Now he’s woken up in the motel room and covered in dust – but what exactly did he see which left him with that dreamy look of wonder?

8. What is actually going on?

Westworld is known for its complex themes and weighty, meaty ideas that need to be fleshed out by viewers to truly understand the plot – and while series three wasn’t as convoluted as its predecessor, there’s still plenty here to unpack as we move away from the park and into a horrific real world.

We can only guess at what’s coming next...
