The bodies of Nevill and June Bamber, along with their adopted daughter Shelia Caffell and Sheila's six-year-old twin sons, Daniel and Nicholas Caffell, were discovered by police at their Essex farmhouse in August 1985.

At first it was believed the deaths were the result of a murder-suicide by Sheila, but the Bambers' adopted son Jeremy was later convicted of five counts or murder. However, he has always protested his innocence and his lawyers have made repeated attempts for the case to be reviewed.

And now a new ITV drama called White House Farm will air later this month which promises to give 'fascinating insight' into the shocking true story. Here's all you need to know.

The murder case dominated the headlines in 1985

Back in August 1985, the nation was left reeling when police found that a family of five had been shot inside a farmhouse in the quiet village of Tolleshunt D'Arcy in Essex at some point between August 6 or 7.

The victims were all members of the same family and included two six-year-old boys: Nevill and June Bamber, their adoptive daughter Shelia Caffell and Sheila's twins Daniel and Nicholas Caffell.

Police initially thought Sheila had killed the family before shooting herself.

However, Detective Sergeant Stan Jones had doubts about the theory and about Jeremy, the Bambers' adopted son and the sole surviving member of the family. Eventually, he was arrested when his ex-girlfriend told police he had implicated himself.

He is currently serving life imprisonment for the murders, but has continued to maintain his innocence.

White House Farm will air at 9pm on January 8.
