Wandsworth Bridge set to go up in 'flames'

Katharine Barney5 April 2012

Wandsworth Bridge has been one of the Thames's less inspiring crossings but now it is to get a dramatic facelift, with glass "flames" that change colour with the tide.

Planning permission for the 40ft glass, bronze and steel sculptures, which will be set on top of stone plinths at each end of the bridge, was granted last week.

The flame effect is created by computer-controlled lighting within the cone-shaped sculptures, which will slowly change colour from a deep purple to turquoise.

Architect Steven Lenczner said the flames will cost around £800,000 to build and install, with the sum being paid by an undisclosed sponsor.

He said: "I'm absolutely delighted that we finally have permission to erect these sculptures. It's been a long time coming but I'm convinced it will be worth it."

The cones will be raised above the sightline of drivers to avoid distracting them.
