Shoreditch’s The Book Club is hosting a bountiful brunch to promote period positivity and raise awareness about period poverty in the UK.

The Bloody Big Brunch will feature their classic cocktail, a Bloody Mary, all-day long - but there’s a twist… guests can only get their hands on a delicious boozy beverage if they are bought with a donation.

In turn, these donations will provide sanitary protection for those who cannot afford it.

Event organisers are keen to shine a spotlight on the UK’s period poverty affecting 1 in 10 women and help those who simply cannot afford tampons or sanitary towels. They also hope the unique and thought-provoking brunch will promote a more positive attitude towards periods in general.

Lee Beattie, one of the organisers of the brunch, says it’s time to remove the taboo of talking about periods, in order to address period poverty.

She said: “Taxed as a non-essential luxury item, the reality is that sanitary products should be a basic essential available to all women.”

“So we’re using an actual luxury - brunching with a Bloody Mary in hand - to shine a light on this massive issue that lots of people – women and men – don’t know much about.”

To help put the donations into action, The Bloody Big Brunch has partnered with Hey Girls! - a buy-one-give-one sanitary towel social enterprise that helps girls and young women from low income families by giving away a box of towels for free for every box sold.

Representatives from Hey Girls! will be on-hand at the Bloody Big Brunch, giving guests the opportunity to make contactless donations so that protection goes instantly to women who need it.

The charitable brunch promises an afternoon of music, storytelling and talks from poverty organisers and campaigners.
