Dads are notoriously hard to buy for, especially when you’ve exhausted all the go-to options — posh socks for the third year in a row sadly isn’t going to cut it.

There is an alternative to finding a material gift to show your old man how much he’s appreciated, though — take him out in London and make some memories instead.

And while June 19 is fast approaching, there are still plenty of options out there if you’re yet to nail down your Father’s Day plans. From brewery tours to whisky-paired menus, here’s our guide to how to celebrate with your dad.

Truman’s Social Club

Handout

Booze tends to be a reliable shout, and the UK’s biggest beer hall is a great place to find it. With more than 20 beers on tap, there’s plenty to sample — and if you book a table in advance for a roast dinner this Sunday, the good folks at Truman’s Social Club will give your dad a free pint of Goodness Brewery lager. Live jazz from the George Crowley Trio will be the soundtrack.

Smith’s Bar & Grill with Pall Mall Barbers

Ash Knotek

If a full-on spa day isn’t quite within your dad’s wheelhouse, then this particular form of pampering might be more suitable. Paddington restaurant Smith’s Bar and Grill has teamed up with the nearby Pall Mall Barbers for a lunch-and-trim combo — tuck into a hearty roast with all the trimmings, before heading a couple of doors down for a half-price haircut (just use the code HAPPYFATHER when booking online).

Brewery tours

If there’s one stereotype that many dads are all too happy to embody, it’s that of the beer nerd — and if your old man knows his porters from his Pilsners, then he’ll enjoy a tour round one of London’s breweries. There are plenty of options, from Meantimein Greenwich, toFive Points in Hackney, Camden Town Brewery and beyond, all of which will lift the lid on the pint-making magic (and offer a few free drinks to keep things well-oiled). Does your dad have a favourite London beer? Check to see if they do a tour.

Kasa & Kin

Handout

Filipino food has landed in Soho in the form of Kasa and Kin. If dad’s a foodie, it’d make for a great spot to take him to — its menu promises “the best Filipino BBQ you’ll find outside of Manila” — but there’s a particular reason to take him on Father’s Day: all fathers will be given a complimentary cocktail, made with ARC Botanical Gin, on June 19.

Greenwich Peninsula Golf Driving Range

If you want to treat your dad to a golf day, you don’t actually have to head beyond the South Circular — just take him to the excellent driving range in Greenwich. It’s a step-up from some of the more basic offerings, with a sofa and table in each bay, and tables to enjoy the crowd-pleasing food (think burgers, ribs, wings and the like). Bringing the whole family along? Make time for the 18-hole crazy golf course. Prices at the driving range start from £7 for 60 balls in 30 minutes, or £31 for a family of four at the crazy golf.

Football: Designing the Beautiful Game

Felix Speller

If the World Cup hadn’t been shunted to November in 2022, then we’d be in the thick of a summer tournament right now. And if your dad is in need of a football fix to fill the gap, then take him to this excellent exhibition down at the Design Museum in Kensington. It’s an exploration of how design has impacted the beautiful game over the years, from ground-breaking stadiums to iconic kits.

Comedy clubs

2Northdown
Adam King

Forget the same old dad jokes he’s been telling since you were a toddler, and head to one of London’s best comedy clubs to see how the professionals do it. From Jen Ives at 2Northdown in King’s Cross to Maisie Adam at The 99 Club in Leicester Square, there are some cracking stand-up shows lined up for this weekend — check out our round-up of the funniest venues in the capital to see what’s on.

Hot Stone

Handout

Looking for somewhere to take a discerning carnivore? You could do much worse than taking him to Hot Stone in Islington, a popular steak and sushi bar which is serving up a one-off platter for Father’s Day. It doesn’t come cheap, priced at £150 for two to share, but the cost is matched by the quality, with premium cuts of wagyu and kobe beef sizzling on the titular, 400C hot stones. Add a tasting flight of three award-winning whiskies for an extra £25. Available June 17-19.

Indie cinemas

The Castle Cinema

A trip to the cinema is a sure-fire way to please a film-buff dad, but this year, swerve the chain multiplex and head to a quirky indie cinema. London is blessed with these gems, from Genesis in Stepney Green to Arthouse in Crouch End. Many of them hold their own when it comes to screening the latest flicks, but you’ll also find a lot of these independents go a bit more experimental with the programming, offering everything from the well-loved classics to film marathons. Here’s a list of our favourite spots.
