A wheel oldie - and there are plenty more motors like these at the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run

Regent Street is to be shut off for the world's oldest motoring event, the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run.

The automated jambouree first revved up as long ago as 1878, when the speed limit increased from 4mph to 14mph. The pleasure of watching 500 jalopies built prior to 1905 doing their vintage stuff should help alleviate the numb realisation that such dizzying speeds would represent progress in rush hour today.

The staggered start is in Hyde Park from 7-8.30am and Regent Street itself closes between 11-3pm for a special display.
