A new installation in Oxford Circus has left some Londoners puzzled.

A number of Twitter users were left wondering what was suspended above the busy roundabout where Oxford Street and Regent Street meet.

The piece, 1.8 London by Janet Echelman, is part of the Lumiere Festival. It will be illuminated from 6.30pm until 10.30pm, when the festival starts on Thursday January 14.

Echelman’s work, inspired by fishing nets, is one of 30 pieces which are on display, and will remain up until Sunday Jan 17. Other highlights include a brightly coloured collection of Neon Dogs, by Deepa Mann Kler and Garden of Light by Tilt.

The gallery below shows a preview of what will be on display.

Elsewhere, a life-like elephant created by Catherine Garret and Top’lá Design make its way along Air Street between Piccadilly and Regent Street.

Lumiere is one of two light festivals dazzling London. In Canary Wharf, the Winter Lights Festival is running until Friday January 22.
