Standard decorates Covent Garden Christmas tree ahead of new launch

Standard’s high for our festive decoration...

The Standard helped kick off the festive season in style last night, hanging a specially created bauble on Covent Garden’s Christmas tree during a pre-lighting ceremony.

It follows a trip by the team to Wood's Farm in Solihull earlier in the month to select and cut down the tree to be used for the display, which is regarded by many as the jewel in the capital’s Christmas crown.

The bauble was placed on the tree by the Standard’s digital features editor, Amira Hashish, to mark the launch next month of new platform GO London, dedicated to the best things to see, eat and do in the capital.

During the ceremony, the 55ft spruce – which came from the same farm that provided the tree for The Queen last year – was also decked out in more than 30,000 fairy lights. It will be officially switched on by celebrities including the cast of 42nd Street and Pudsey the Bear on November 14.

On the night, shoppers in the area will be able to buy exclusive gifts from Tom Ford, Petersham Nurseries and Paul Smith.

Exclusive gift wrap made in collaboration with the British Fashion council will also be available at pop-up Noel. All proceeds from these sales go straight to Children in Need.
