First look at RHS Garden Wisley's £20 million revamp

This is the first look at the £20 million revamp of the Royal Horticultural Society’s flagship garden.

The opening of the Welcome Building and surrounding gardens and plant centre will take place at the RHS Garden Wisley in Surrey on Monday. The garden will sell the largest number of rare and unique plant varieties since it was gifted to the RHS more than a century ago.

The varieties, which have all been grown in the UK, include Jurassic Gold — a gold fern that can withstand low temperatures — and pelargoniums with scents from Rose to Cola.

RHS founding ambassador Alan Titchmarsh will formally open the additions to the 240-acre garden.

He said: “Millions visit Wisley every year to be inspired by the horticulture and now the site will be a permanent showcase to celebrate specialist UK growers.

“The plant specialists grow the rarest and most beautiful varieties in the world, which thrive in UK gardens.”

The Welcome Building will also include a larger restaurant, cafe and visitor facilities and is the first phase in an overall £70 million of planned upgrades. Next year will see the opening of the UK’s first National Centre for Horticultural Science and Learning, while the final phase will refurbish the on-site laboratory.
