Bar Gazer: Bar Américain at Brasserie Zédel

P70
5 September 2012

The buzz: an opulent 1930s bar by Piccadilly Circus whipping up cocktails with Golden Age names such as The Gatsby.

The deal: although all the original Art Deco panelling and light fittings remain, the basement bar felt a little dark and dingy for a sunny summer evening — but come winter its more glamorous side will thrive. The cocktails really are sensational. Sit at the bar to watch the expert bartenders at work — they’ll even conjure up something bespoke.

Good for: pre-dinner cocktails.

Order: one of the house cocktails, the Spritz Americain (champagne, lemon juice and grapefruit liqueur) or the Belle Zedel (vodka, crème de Myrtille, rose liqeur, rhubarb bitters and egg white).

By the way: the Brasserie next door does three courses for £11.25.

Find it: 20 Sherwood St, W1 (brasseriezedel.com).
